American Ingenuity
ShopBot's professional CNC routers,
made in Durham, North Carolina, are
helping people make a difference
all over the world.
In Nairobi, an engineering
student is using a
ShopBot to make windmills
that will deliver electricity
to poor countries, efficiently
and inexpensively. In
Minnesota, an artist and
young mother of two is
designing and ShopBotting signs
for A-list Hollywood productions.
In North Carolina, an aerospace manufacturer is putting
ShopBot to work, increasing productivity immensely. In a
high school in Texas, kids are using the latest educational
tool - a ShopBot - to master CAD/CAM skills they can use
on the job when they graduate.
Across the U.S. and around the globe, ShopBot Tools
are integral within FabLabs, whose mission is to give people
in less-developed locations the cutting-edge technology
tools to make almost anything using digital design and
fabrication, helping them better themselves and their
communities by leap-frogging into 21st century lean manufacturing.
ShopBot Tools began in the workshop/barn of Ted Hall
more than 15 years ago. Since that time, affordable
ShopBots have become one of the largest selling CNC
routers. Almost 6,000 are productively working away in
small shops and larger production facilities across the
United States and around the world. They can cut wood,
plastic, metals, styrofoam - just about any material - with
power and precision.
Today ShopBot makes a variety of tools with features
and at price points that make them suitable for a variety
of applications from signmaking, cabinetmaking and all
types of woodworking, to a range of production operations
from producing stealth fighters to manufacturing hitech
housing.

New Generation
Hardware & Software
OSAI USA unveils OPENcontrol,
a new generation hardware and
software platform for automation
and motion control products
connectable to a single network
developed by OSAI and Prima
Electronics, hence the name
OPENcontrol (Osai Prima
Electronics Numerical Control).
The product line consists of a full
range of solutions address-ing
the most diverse application requirements: from
OPENBasic, a low priced PLC of compact design, to the
highly sophisticated Numerical Control designed to handle
complete manufacturing processes.
With over 50 years of CNC experience, the OPENcontrol
line stands for continuity in innovation. Continuity stems
from compatibility with the controls of OSAIs current 10
series line.
The three software levels are: OPEN10 - General
Motion Control with handling capacity of up to 64 interpolated
axes and 12 simultaneous axes; OPEN20 - CNC
Control that has (ISO programming) language and to
interpolate 12 simultaneous axes and over a total of 64
axes that may be configured and used in different processes
(groups of interpolated axes), optimized for 2D
processes. And OPEN30 -CNC control designed to manage
5 simultaneous axes for use in 3D applications, with
automatic compensation of machine kinematics.
All the products in the OPENcontrol family are able to
use different computation power levels, whether with integrated
HMI or with HMI distributed via the TCP/IP over
Ethernet protocol in a Windows 7, XPE, XP, Pro, or Vista
environment, depending on the application related needs.
The characteristics shared by all the components are
the operating system: Windows CE, which, while retaining
all the characteristics of the Windows operating system,
offer the real time performances that are indispensable in
the field of industrial automation. Connectivity - the standard
TCP/IP over Ethernet protocol serves as the basis for
connecting all the products in the family, enabling information
to be exchanged between the various nodes.
Language - at PLC levels all the products in the OPEN
family use one language (conforming to standard IEC
61131). And HMI - at HMI level there is a wide choice of
terminals connectable to the Ethernet, from the portable
TOP5 pendant to a range of Panel PCs, sized 6 to 19.

Polymer Building Sheet
King StarBoard ST is
an environmentally
friendly, high-density
polyethylene sheet that
provides a more
scratch-resistant surface
for many original
King StarBoard applications.
High scratchresistant
makes it an
excellent construction
material. In addition,
its high strength and stiffness makes it desirable for applications
where less structural support is available.
The sheet has been a big hit in the casual outdoor furniture
industry, outdoor kitchen market and the cabinetry
industry. Because it is environmentally stabilized, the material
has been developed to withstand the harshest of conditions.
It can be used in wet areas that need to be washed
often for cleaning or are regularly exposed to moisture.
King StarBoard ST along with King MicroShield makes
an outstanding antimicrobial sheet, it is a non-toxic antimicrobial
upgrade that makes these
products stay cleaner between cleanings
and is 99.9% effective inhibiting
the growth of product-damaging
microorganisms, such as, bacteria,
algae and fungi on the sheet. Unlike
other antimicrobials, it retains its
effectiveness for the lifetime of the
sheet without leaching into the environment.
The product is EPA registered
and listed with the FDA as a
modifier to medical devices.

Factory Automation
TigerStop LLC will offer demonstrations on implementing
end-to-end factory automation. AWFS visitors
will discover how TigerStop products enable manufacturers
to design and build custom products ondemand
with minimal inventory and short lead times.
There are two critical productivity tools that allow
a near instantaneous automation path for manufacturers.
The first is the adoption of CAD or ERP software
that ties together and automates the processes of order entry, design
and invoicing. The second is the connection of the software to factory automation
equipment with TigerStop linear positioners that extend automation
directly into the factory, allowing custom orders to be designed and then built

Milling & Routing Tools
LMT Onsrud LP has introduced an expanded line of
cutting tools to address one of the fastest growing
categories of materials machined in todays job shop
market mechanical plastics such as ABS, Delrin,
Nylon, PET, UHMW and others.
Many of the problems encountered when using traditional
end mills, such as chip rewelding, hand
deburring and slow feed rates are eliminated when
using tools developed specifically for milling plastics.
The 52-700 series has a double flute spiral O geometry designed to provide
a smooth edge finish and easy chip evacuation. Output increases of 40 to
50% are obtainable when using suggested RPM and feed rates.
