Spartech To Produce Coextruded Multi-Layer Plastic Sheets

Spartech Corporation was recently awarded a substantial, long-term program by Visteon Corporation to manufacture coextruded, multi-layer plastic sheets applicable in thermoformed fuel tanks. This represents a multimillion dollar contract that will enable Spartech to produce its plastic sheets for the new Volkswagen Passat. Spartech’s goal is to position itself as the main supplier for this type of sheet in Europe as interest in the new process increases among other OEMs.

The process is a new and innovative technology that boasts a better design and lower fuel tank emissions. Currently, most fuel tanks are blow-molded, but the thermoforming process will allow for greater flexibility in the fuel tank’s design, keeping emissions low to conform with new legislation in Europe and North America focused on improving air quality. It is expected that other OEMs will follow Volkswagen’s example, so this is seen as the start of what may become a very large market.
