FIRE-SAFE POLYCARBONATE FILMS
Almost all plastic films, such as those composed of polyester and polystyrene, are flammable. Worse still, they emit deadly gases when burned, which can be fatal in less than five minutes. The Coburn Corporation introduced Rodyne -- transparent and textured color plastic films available in non-flammable polycarbonate and vinyl (PVC) -- the first and only commercially available films of their kind which do not support combustion. Coburn uses an exclusive manufacturing formula for a non-flammable film, used in the polycarbonate Rodyne product (vinyl is by nature self-extinguishing). Available in a wide variety of transparent colors and texture styles, Rodyne can be used "anyplace that decorative plastic can be used," says John White, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications. "Rodyne is especially useful for plastic plants and foliage. You find a lot of this very elaborate plastic foliage in fine restaurants and theaters -- the last place you want to have a fire," he says. Some other applications for the films include decorative use on greeting cards, packaging wrap, window tinting coatings, appliques printed with text, overhead transparencies, adhesive tapes, and printed circuits. Rodyne PVC can be conventionally printed and die cut, even thermally, the polycarbonate requires steel tooling. Both the transparent and textured film is suitable for virtually all fine-line printing methods -- the textured surface is on one side only, leaving the other smooth and ready for printing. Films are available in a wide variety of body-colored hues, including optically clear (colorless) and 12 standard transparent colors, and a collection of 12 different designer-oriented textured patterns. The film can be ordered in tapes, sheets, and rolls, in special widths up to 30", in thicknesses ranging from 2 to 20 mils. A moisture resistant, peel-and-stick adhesive backing can also be specified for the film.
