PLASTIC RANKS AS ONE OF CENTURY'S TOP NEWS STORIES
Asked to choose the most significant news events of the past 100 years, veteran journalists say the invention of plastic was one of the finest moments of the 20th century. On its list of top 100 "Stories of the Century" released by the Newseum, a journalism museum based in Arlington, VA, plastic ranks number 46 -- higher than the first jet airplane flight, the Watergate scandal and the establishment of the United Nations. "Many of the most significant developments of the 20th century would not have been possible without plastics," said Ron Yocum,President of the American Plastics Council. "Plastics have become so pervasive in our homes, offices, schools and cars that we often take them for granted. But when you stop to consider the literally thousands of items made of plastics that touch our lives so profoundly, it's truly mind-boggling."
