DANGER: FALLING OBJECTS
Bowling ball displays call for extreme strength and durability, as consumers continually pick up the product to judge weight, test finger holes, and place it back on the display. Having a display break at this moment is a liability nightmare.
Ebonite, one of the world's largest manufacturers of bowling balls, was experiencing 75 percent breakage during shipping as well as handling breakage in three out of four of its new in-store display units.
During extensive field testing, the original displays consistently failed, often cracking under the weight of the balls and their constant removal and replacement onto individual holders. Several thousand wall display units, already in place, were no good.
Enhance Industries designed a new display using CYRO Industries' HP(r) multipolymer sheet to replace the existing breaking displays. During field testing the new display held fast. The display, measuring 3.5" tall by 10.5" wide by 9.5" deep, and weighing just under two pounds, proved quite versatile serving a dual purpose as both a slat wall and countertop display.
They chose the clear sheet because of its high-impact strength, rigidity, light weight, ease of fabrication, high optical quality, and its ability to bond well with other materials.
Fabricating methods used included forming, heat bending, routing, and flame polishing. In measuring the display's strength, Ebonite dropped bowling balls from heights of four feet--all displays passed the test.
