Letter from the Editor

For the new year we gave the magazine (which this website mirrors) a facelift. New fonts, graphics and colors provide a bold platform to showcase the features and series we have planned for 2003. We hope you enjoy our new look.

In the November/December issue we announced the addition of a Routing Series and the return of our Thermoforming Series. In addition to regular coverage of the machinery, equipment, tooling and accessories used when fabricating and forming plastic shapes, this year will also see increased coverage of various types of plastic materials distributed and fabricated by our readers. The spotlights will feature properties, applications and fabricating guidelines from transparent and mechanical thermoplastics to thermosets.

As 2003 gets underway, many are braced for another challenging year. We believe an industry trade show will help create opportunities and it is high on our list of priorities. Your feedback has been in favor of an independent forum. As we continue to explore this opportunity, we welcome your input via our on-line Trade Show Survey. Your direction will help develop the most targeted event for your interests.

This issue features fourteen manufacturers and suppliers of "Saws For Cutting Plastics." From horizontal and vertical panel saws to sliding, band and radial arm saws, these companies are ready to serve your cutting needs. The article begins with an overview of the types of saws available and continues with a review of some of the machinery offered by these leading companies. A complete contact directory can be found via a link at the end of the article.

Our new Routing Series kicks off with "Trimming Thermoformed Parts." Routing is one of the best ways for thermoformers "...to remove flashing, separate parts and create holes or cutouts." Van Niser reviews both manual and CNC tooling, fixturing and cutting guidelines.

In Thermoforming, Michael Dowell discusses the various plastics commonly formed today. The first of a two-part article, it will help you identify which material is best for your application.

Also in this issue in Safety Solutions, Jack Podojil provides an outline of the NIOSH standard for exposure to "Methylene Chloride".

The March/April 2003 issue should not be missed. It will feature "Routing Hard Plastics," "Welding Equipment & Supplies" and the second part of "The Most Commonly Thermoformed Plastics". As always, your feedback is welcomed.

Enjoy the issue.
