A Corporate Display Made of Cellular Polycarbonate
Samsung, a leading electronics
manufacturer,
was in need of a display
to be erected adjacent
to their
Manhattan showroom in the
Times-Warner Building…and
they needed it to be erected
quickly.
Samsung wanted a display
which would be representative
of their place in the electronics
field and which would be impressive to their customers.
The assignment to build the display was given to a
Manhattan firm, EventQuest, which designs and builds displays throughout the world. EventQuest
had in mind a double translucent wall with
LED lighting inside the cavity. They chose
to work with EXTECH/Exterior Technologies,
Inc. of Pittsburgh because, among
other things, they knew that EXTECH
builds systems made of translucent cellular
polycarbonate.
EXTECH decided that the ideal
wall panel material would be the 1-
9/16” thick tongue and groove cellular
polycarbonate panel made by
Politec of Italy and distributed by
their US affiliate, CO-EX. These panels
are not only rigid and highly resistant to impact,
but the
tongue and
groove design
meant that they
could be assembled
very quickly
(they simply snap
together) and
they also could
be disassembled
for future reassembly.
Samsung wanted the
translucent walls to be
backlighted and to be the
special blue color that is
“Samsung blue.” EXTECH
used clear panels from COEX
and applied a coat of
translucent blue paint,
experimenting until the
right color was achieved.
The base for the walls
was a custom aluminum
framework, designed and
fabricated by EXTECH. The
walls were made of double
panels separated by 12” and
with LED lighting between.
Another requirement of
the installation was that fasteners
could not be driven
into either the floor or the
ceiling.
Therefore, EXTECH
devised a system of screw
jacks with rubber tips that
allowed contact with the ceiling
such that friction then
held the panels in place.
The complex series of walls
included inset television screens. The entire assembly was
done in one (long) night to allow completion before opening
day.
Modulit 500 by Politec was the ideal product for this
application. No other product could have been erected so
quickly and could have, ultimately, produced the rich
translucent tones that were achieved here. Everyone was
a winner on this project, especially the customer.
