Curbell Provides Materials to Winning Race Team

Curbell Plastics, Inc., one of the nation’s premier suppliers of plastic sheet, rod, tube and film continued its support of the RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) Baja SAE race team with HDPE sheet material donations for its’ 2018 all-terrain competition vehicle. The HDPE material was used to make the skid plate for this year’s vehicle protecting vital undercarriage mechanicals. Scott Moss, Senior Inside Sales Representative for Curbell Plastics Rochester location commented on the partnership with the RIT Baja Team, “We have been donating to the team for about 15 years providing materials used in prototypes and competition vehicles. It has been exciting for us to watch this team progress over the years.”

To compete in the Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition, engineering students are tasked with designing and building a single-seat, all-terrain vehicle. The prototype must be a reliable, maintainable, ergonomic, and economic production vehicle that would serve a recreational user market. The students learn to work together as a team to design, engineer, build, test, promote, and compete with a vehicle while remaining within the SAE rule limitations. This provides an opportunity for the students to experience the production cycle first hand under many different conditions as well as the importance of the manufacturing and marketing processes for the production of an all-terrain vehicle.

RIT Baja SAE competes in international competitions sponsored and organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers. This year the team competed in 3 regional competitions earning first place in Maryland, third place in Kansas, and first place in Oregon securing them a first place finish overall at the Baja SAE North American Competition. The team was honored with the Mike Schmidt Memorial Iron Team Award by having the most points earned from all three of the North American Competitions.
