5-Axis Machines Feature New Rotary Axes
Motionmaster, Inc. has redesigned its 4th and 5th axis construction and drive system to provide 3x greater stiffness and accuracy over its previous design.
The heart of the system is a directly coupled brushless servomotor used to drive the axes. These motors feature an integrated gear reducer (a 91:1 gear ratio) and are custom-made to deliver near zero backlash. The motors are directly mounted to the axis and require no maintenance, lubrication, or adjustment.
Other design enhancements have greatly simplified routine alignment procedures and spindle adjustment. The 4th axis features a hardstop while maintaining travels of ± 183°
. This prevents the possibility of "overtwisting" the electrical wires, a condition that occurs under abnormal circumstances.
The heavy-duty design has made it possible to offer a broader range of spindle options, from 10 HP IS030 taper to 24 HP IS040 taper. All ISO spindles feature an interchangeable Kit Shaft design. The Kit Shaft allows users to install a new shaft and bearing set on the spindle, oftentimes without removing the spindle from the machine. This greatly reduces downtime associated with bearing failure.
